Our Salta, Calchaqui Valleys & Humahuaca Self Drive Tour is a perfect base to go exploring the Calchaquí Valleys in the South and Humahuaca in the North.
This circuit in the northwest of Argentina on a self drive tour will reveal its many hidden faces. You will discover not only the breathtaking scenery, but also know and share the culture and cuisine of the Andes. Between 1100m altitude from Salta through mountain passes at over 4000m, and you will go to the meeting of one of the most fascinating regions in Argentina.
Day 1 – Arrive in Salta
Arrive at the local airport in Salta and private transfer with English speaking guide to the hotel or to the car rental office to pick up the car. Our guide will deliver a complete package with maps and tourist information to help you get around as securely as possible on the local roads. This afternoon, enjoy the lovely city of Salta. We recommend visiting the
village of San Lorenzo, the Artisan Market, or the Summit of Mt San Bernardo, to name a few. In the center of the city, we recommend to park the car and walk around at your leisure. This area is about seven blocks long and so much can be discovered by taking a stroll. Overnight in Salta at the selected hotel.
Day 2 – Salta/Cachi (136 km)
Exit Salta towards the South to enjoy two days in the freshness of the Calchaquí Valleys. Take National Route Nº 68 until reaching the area near the Train to the Clouds. Soon afterwards, take National Route Nº 33 that heads towards the city of Cachi. En route there are many attractive places to visit. At Chicoana, for instance, take a short or long walk on the Cuesta del Obispo (Bishop Slope) and through La Recta del Tin Tin. Arrive in Cachi. Handle these roads with caution. 136 km paved/20 km approx. unpaved.Overnight in Cachi at the selected hotel.
Day 3 – Cachi/Molinos/Cafayate/Salta (210 km)
Leave Cachi to the south of Salta city by National Route Nº 40 (a section of Argentina’s longest highway). You will pass by several small towns and it is recommended to visit Colte (where you can see artisans weave the typical ponchos of this region), Molinos (with a beautiful church), and to stop to enjoy the view of the lunar landscape in Quebrada de las Flechas (Arrowhead Gorge). Arrive in Cafayate around lunch time. This is a great opportunity to go to a typical warehouse that specializes in Torrontés wine production (a dry and fruity white wine). After lunch, head back to Salta city via the magnificent landscapes of the Quebrada de la Conchas. Important: this will be a long day; make sure you leave Cachi as early as possible to ensure you can safely enjoy the landscape and finish the trip before darkness. 210 km paved/138 km unpaved.Overnight in Salta at the selected hotel.
Day 4 – Salta/Purmamarca (180 km)
Leave Salta northwards towards Purmamarca. You may choose the winding old highway, Route Nº 9 (with 400 curves in total), to enjoy the drive through the hanging forest. At the city of Jujuy you will join with National Route Nº 9. From here, switch onto International Route Nº 52 for just a few kilometers until finding the town of Purmamarca. We recommend the classic stroll down Los Colorados path (less than 5 km), which goes through the heart of the Hill of Seven Colors. 180 km, all paved. Overnight in Purmamarca at the selected hotel.
Day 5 – Purmamarca/Humahuaca Gorge (136 km)
Exit from Purmamarca back the way you came towards Route Nº 9 to continue your way to the most colorful towns in the Gorge. Among them we recommended Tilcara with its indigenous ruins, and Uquía with one of the oldest churches in the zone, where you may also see the traditional pottery of the region. In Humahuaca town you can find typical Andean cuisine for lunch. After lunch return to the area of Purmamarca. 136 km, paved. Overnight in Purmamarca at the selected hotel.
Day 6 – Purmamarca/Salta (187 km)
Leave Purmamarca back the way you came to Salta. Along the the way, we suggest visiting the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, with one of the most beautiful cathedrals in northern Argentina. Arrive in Salta. 187 km, paved. Overnight in Salta at the selected hotel.
Day 7 – Depart Salta
