TRANSPORT :
Located on a private 3,200 acre reserve, the lodge is constructed of traditional rainforest materials and nestled well concealed into the lush surroundings. There is a raised lookout above the bar and lounge which offers a scenic vista of Pilchicocha lake.
Typical Itinerary (3 or 4 Nights)
Day 1: Fly from Quito to Coca (Flight not included), on the banks of the great Rio Napo, tributary to the Amazon. Board a motorized dugout canoe and travel downriver to Sacha Lodge. Overnight at Sacha Lodge.
Observe the rainforest canopy from a large tree canopy platform 130 feet above the ground in an enormous cecropia tree or from Sacha’s 940-foot canopy walkway. Explore the jungle streams in dugout canoes or hike the forest trails and learn about medicinal plants and healing from native guides. Night walks and canoe trips, with the aid of flashlights, reveal creatures seldom seen during the day.
The forest is filled with birdlife – more than 500 species. Toucans and macaws are some of the more colorful ones, and you can visit the Yasuni parrot lick a short distance from the lodge where flocks of parrots gather to eat mineral-rich clay banks along the Napo River. You’ll see howler monkeys and three-toed sloths in the forest canopy and the lodge’s Butterfly House breeds more than 40 species of colorful butterflies.
Cool off at the end of the day in Sacha’s deep lake or have a drink in the thatched roof bar!
Note: If you are particularly interested in birding while at Sacha Lodge, please let us know when you book so that we can arrange to have an expert birding guide available for you.
Day 4: Return to Coca by boat for your flight back to Quito. (Flight not included)
The Yasuni Parrot Lick:
Just a short distance from the lodge is Ecuador’s most accessible parrot lick, an exposed clay bank where brightly coloured parrots of several different species gather in the early morning.
The Butterfly House:
Sacha Lodge is home to one of the largest butterfly farms in Ecuador. Designed to be a live exhibition conservatory, the Butterfly House is now succesfully breeding nearly 40 local butterfly species.
Activities:
Native guides with expert knowledge of the rainforest lead small groups on a variety of forays into the area. Activities are spread out over a wide area, and guests are allowed to determine difficulty and duration of their outings.
Several trails lead through pristine terra firme forest, where 150-foot kapok trees tower above and roots from huge buttresses to give support to the trees. Others follow strategically raised boardwalks in seasonally flooded forests and one trail even leads across fallen tree trunks and to a steel cable zip-line through rich swamplands.
Another favourite activity is to paddle dugout canoes along tannin-rich black-water creeks and lakes where luxuriant lianas, bromeliads and palm trees thrive.
