The Concepción is a dormant volcano and the Maderas is extinct volcano covered by a deep cloud forest and a lagoon on the top of the crater. The Island was a ceremonial place for ancient Indian culture; because of this many petroglyphs and stone idols are found in different archaeological sites and in the Altagracia town. The colonial city of Granada was founded by Captain Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in the year 1524. It was built next to the Mombacho volcano and the great lake of Nicaragua. Named after the city of Granada in Spain, this city has plenty of colonial churches, narrow streets and large homes with beautiful indoor patios, tiled roofs and pretty colonial colors. Upon arrival, we will have a sightseeing tour and later arrive at the main plaza for our walking tour of the surrounding area. We will see the famous “Casa de Los Tres Mundos” and the San Francisco convent. Here, we will have the opportunity to see and take pictures of mysterious idols made by our ancestors.

This is an impressive collection of genuine pre-Columbian sculptures in human and animal shapes. During the tour we will learn about the history of the city, and the adventures of filibuster William Walker, who invaded the city in the year 1855. We will learn about the civil wars that basically destroyed the city in the past. At the same time, we will witness the current restoration process which only makes the city even more attractive. Due to the historical and cultural value of the city, it is in the process of being declared a heritage of mankind by UNESCO. Then, we will continue to Lake Nicaragua for a relaxing boat ride around some of the islands formed by the impressive Mombacho volcano. See the volcanic evidence and influence of the area. Enjoy great landscape views and wildlife and of course have a chance to take pictures. Then they will take the lunch in a local restaurant in Granada.
In the afternoon we will go to the small twons, were given their name in the early colonial period because the Spaniards decided to paint their homes in white. Nowadays “white towns” is a part of Nicaraguan folklore. The interesting fact is that each town has its own specialty when it comes to art, food and tradition. In the past, these towns were known as “witch doctor’s towns”, since a lot of the people were shamans and did that for a living. Nowadays, there are not many witch doctors left, but some people suspect that certain individuals in the towns are still devoted to these practices. There is a good balance between the rainy and dry seasons and this combines to make this a beautiful area full of fruits and trees. The landscape is very attractive and people are humble and friendly. We take today’s tour through these towns making strategic stops in the most interesting places. We learn how people make bamboo baskets and furniture and we go by Somoza and Sandino’s native towns. We’ll do shopping in San Juan de Oriente and Catarina (pottery). Here you find beautiful arts and crafts and nurseries with beautiful flowers. We will also see the view from Catarina of the surrounding water and volcano landscape and get to know the Nicaraguan’s character, personality and way of life. Overnight at Hotel Colonial, Granada. (B,L)

Day 6 – Granada/Leon
Breakfast at Hotel Colonial. Then We will go to Masaya Volcano and then continue to León.
Masaya Volcno is the first national park in the country was established in 1979. The park includes a beautiful volcanic lake known as the “Masaya lagoon”. Upon arrival, we will witness all the influence that volcanic activities have had in the shaping of the zone. Only ten minutes from the entrance we will be able to visit the environmental center, a museum where we can see a model of the park and also see paintings of Nicaraguan artists relating to the history of the volcano.

We’ll Learn about the tectonic plates and volcanic regions of the planet and get to know about the flora and fauna of this wildlife refuge. We will continue our trip to the summit of the volcano, where we will get out of our vehicle and walk the few steps to see the Santiago crater, active since 1946. We will also have time to explore the surrounding area and see more volcanic formations, learn about the Aratinga Strenua (amazing birds living in the toxic crater walls) as well as the history of the Spanish priests who explored the volcano and the superstitious beliefs held by the natives who inhabited the area. Then We will continue to León City and take the lunch in a local restaurant. Overnight at Convento Hotel, León. (B,L)

Day 7 – Leon
Breakfast at Hotel Convento and then a city tour.
The colonial city of Leon was founded by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in the year 1524 next to Lake Xolotlan and the active Momotombo volcano. There were important indigenous towns in the area. The city was actually built next to the town known as Imabite but in the year 1610 it was moved to its current location after being destroyed by a series of eruptions from the Momotombo volcano and the city was basically buried. That is why the city is called the Central American Pompey.

We will begin with the city of Leon to see the main churches including the monumental cathedral, the largest in Central America, located at the main square. We will also see the birdhouse of Ruben Dario, the “Ortiz Gurdian” art gallery and the “El Convento” hotel and its colonial architecture.
