Follow Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s footsteps in Cartagena, the city of his youth. Then go and submerge yourself in his bohemian years in the city of Barranquilla and last go to Aracataca where Macondo revives magically through your eyes.
Day 01 Arrive Cartagena
On arrival at the Cartagena de Indias’ Rafael Núñez International airport, you will be greeted by one of our agents who will take you in an air-conditioned private vehicle to your hotel.
Late in the afternoon, you will start a mythical trip by walking around the historic district of the old city, taking pleasure in the enchantment that the smell of the late sea breeze and small sidewalks give away for your imagination. We will go by the Gold Museum, the Plaza de San Pedro, the Palacio de la Inquisition, the Modern Art museum and finish the walk at the Defensive Wall of San Francisco. Day 02 Cartagena
This morning commence the first part of the Route to Macondo. The inspiring places of Garcia Márquez’ youth that left an imprint in his writing are the University of Cartagena, the Parque los Evangelios, the street of the Windows, the Hotel Santa Clara, the Heredia Theatre, the nuthouse “La Divina Pastora”, the Café de la Parroquia, and the Plaza de Bolivar are among some of the places you will see. These buildings and plazas have each part of the colorful stories that he relates to in his books. Remainder of the afternoon at leisure. Overnight at Hotel Casa del Tejadillo 4* (B,L)
Day 03 Cartagena/Barranquilla
Morning at leisure to stroll around the old city or just relax by the pool. This afternoon you will travel by Seat in Bus service in a modern air-conditioned vehicle to Barranquilla. Barranquilla has all types of gourmet restaurants due to the different immigrants that made La Puerta de Oro their home. Some of the best are Arab, Italian and Spanish, as well as the traditional food from the coast. Overnight at Hotel El Prado 4* (B) Or similar.
Day 04 Barranquilla
Starting the second part of the Route, you will discover the places that García Márquez shared with his bohemian and intellectual friends such as the famous painter Alejandro Obregon and writer Alvaro Cepeda Samudio. The stroll will start with the architectural sites of the famous barrio El Prado where you can observe the house of the local newspaper “El Heraldo” where he wrote his famous column La Jirafa (the giraffe).
Afterwards continue to the church El Perpetuo Socorro and the Barrio Abajo where the small store “El Tokio” which was a must hang-out, the Lonchería Americana and ending at the Café Roma which were the bars that set the ambience of “Memorias de mis putas tristes”. Restaurant Bar La Cueva is a Foundation made to perpetuate the legacy of Garcia Marquez and all his friends. Day 05 Barranquilla/Santa Marta
This morning you visit the Museo del Caribe. The museum is an open space that makes the city breathe. Colombian Caribbean culture is explored and a permanent exhibition about García Márquez as well as some unique pieces of his life belongings is available for your enjoyment.
This afternoon depart Barranquilla overland on Seat in Bus service to Santa Marta and your hotel. The journey will take approximately two and a half hours, driving through some beautiful tropical scenery. Overnight at Hotel Casa del Farol 4* or similar (B)
Day 06 Santa Marta
Today you will commence the third part of your journey called “Garcia Marquez and his dictators”. This period recreates the solitude of power evidenced in his novel “The General in his Labyrinth”. Follow Bolivar’s last sojourn in Santa Marta as the end of Part IV of our route. We will go to the Historical quarters, Museum of the Aduana, and the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino. After lunch enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Overnight at Hotel Casa del Farol 4* or similar (B,L)
Day 07 Santa Marta/Aracataca/Santa Marta
Today is the start part four of your journey through Garcia Marquez’s place of birth Aracataca, best known as “Macondo” in his Nobel Prize winning novel “100 years of Solitude”, and where his magic realism, was born as well.
Visit the train station, the sculpture of “Remedios La Bella” rising to heaven, el Camellón de los Almendros, the Montessori pre-school, the library, “Los Remedios de la Bella”, The United Food Company store, the Museum, the Plaza de Bolivar and the house of the Telegrapher. Lunch will be served at “Restaurant Gabo” where you will have a taste of some traditional cuisine. Afterwards return to Santa Marta and your hotel. Day 08 Depart Santa Marta
This morning transfer to the airport for your flight out. (B)
