Between city tours and excursions there will also be plenty of time to relax on the glorious, sprawling beaches that characterise this part of the world.
Valles de Vinales: The Origin of Cohiba
Vinales Valley is one of the highlights of this combined tour, where you can wander amongst the fertile soil ideal for growing the legendary Cuban tobacco; whether Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, or Montecristo, the tobacco for these world famous cigars grows right here in this part of the country.
The landscape here is characterised by impressive karst mountains, also known as “mogotes”, that offer the area a surreal and unique backdrop.
Here, you can visit the Indian cave, “Cueva del Indio”, which can be explored on foot before transferring to a boat on the mystical underground river which has eroded the soft limestone over the years. You’ll pass impressive stalactite formations and bats, before treating yourself to a freshly squeezed sugar cane juice when you reach the other side.
The Ruins of Chichen Itza
The Chichen Itza temple is a firm favourite on this tour, allowing visitors to step back in time amongst the ruins of this former Mayan city. The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988 and it is one of the most popular attractions on the Yucatan Peninsula.
It is believed that this ancient town that stretches out over 1 km in diameter played a hugely significant role between the 8th and 11th centuries, whilst various pieces of pottery found in the area suggest that Chichen Itza has a history that dates back two thousand years. A variety of architectural styles can be found here, including the great step pyramid “El Castillo”, which is particularly impressive.
The tour culminates on dreamy Tulum beach in Mexico where, beneath the waving palms and against a backdrop of glistening sand and calm waters, you can relax and process your time spent in this magnificent part of the world. Here, you can swim and snorkel amongst the vibrant marine life, or enjoy some delicious food at one of the snack bars and cafes.
Alternatively, you can explore the ruins of Tulum, which are uniquely located on a limestone cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, making this a hot destination for cultural travellers. As the sun sets, you can enjoy a cocktail looking out across the sea and relish the company of your new found friends and travelling companions
